UT Chancellor Beverly Davenport's tweet draws sports fans' ire, again

University of Tennessee Chancellor Beverly Davenport spent her first morning on the job Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, talking to students and media.

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville's new chancellor is not having fun on Twitter dot com.

The school's sports fans have once again savaged Chancellor Beverly Davenport after a social media misstep betrayed her unfamiliarity with the region.

In a Twitter post Saturday morning, Davenport encouraged people to come to Neyland Stadium at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday for "Rokerthon 3" — in which Today Show weatherman Al Roker will visit five colleges in five days and attempt to set world records at each.

UT is hoping to bring out more than 4,000 students, faculty and staff to form the largest human letter, a Power T.

"Be a part of another Tennessee championship," Davenport's tweet reads, "@TODAYshow  #rokerthon Wed, 31st, 5:30 am. Help make the biggest PowerT."

Diehard Vols fans appeared altogether unimpressed with Davenport's conflation of the frivolous world record attempt with winning a championship — a serious matter in Big Orange Country. Many took issue with the use of the word "another" when the school's football team hasn't won an SEC or national championship since 1998.

The men's basketball team last won an SEC regular season championship in 2008. The women's basketball team won the national championship in 2008 and boasts the most recent success, an SEC regular season championship in 2015.

Other Twitter users pointed out that Wednesday is the 29th, not the 31st.

This isn't the first time that Davenport, who has a Ph.D. in communication studies, has ticked off Tennessee fans with a social media faux pas.

During her first week as Chancellor, she misquoted the Vols slogan in a tweet that said, "I will give my all to Tennessee today and always." The correct slogan, which Vol football players slap on their way to the field on game day, is "I will give my all for Tennessee today."

A UT spokeswoman did not immediately return requests for comment.
