Camp report: Milone roughed up in Brewers' 12-11 loss to Reds

Brewers catcher Manny Piña, shown celebrating a three-run homer last week against the Chicago Cubs, hit his fourth home run of spring training on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

On the field: For the second consecutive game, the Brewers’ starting pitcher was roughed up. But, unlike Junior Guerra, who allowed 12 runs (seven earned) in 3 2/3 innings against Oakland, Tommy Milone does not have a roster spot guaranteed.

Milone surrendered nine hits and seven runs in 3 1/3 innings to a split-squad Cincinnati team that pulled out a 12-11 victory. The 30-year-old left-hander has a $1.25 million contract that is not guaranteed and said he hoped the one bad outing would not work against him.

“It was just one of those days where things didn’t work out,” he said. “I was leaving the ball up. I just have to learn from it and try to forget it.

“Obviously, the sooner the better in finding out your role. They have decisions to make on a lot of different parts of the roster, and I understand that. Days like this happen. I would hope they know that. It doesn’t help at all but I don’t know if one outing is going to unravel everything. I feel like I’ve thrown the ball well this spring besides today.”

Manny Piña slugged his fourth homer, Eric Sogard tripled in two runs and Ivan De Jesus Jr. went 3 for 4 to boost his spring average to .405.

Cactus juice: Right-hander Hiram Burgos was back in Brewers camp after a tournament-long stint with Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Puerto Rico bowed in the championship game to Team USA but Burgos said his silver-medal experience was “incredible.”

“It was a great time for the whole island of Puerto Rico,” said Burgos, who reported back with the blond-dyed hair that became a unifying symbol for players on the team. “Everyone was so excited. We had support from everyone back home. There have been rough times there and this was huge for the island, something special.

“Puerto Rico won the Caribbean Series, also, so this has been a good start to the year. We had a blast. Wearing that uniform was such a blessing. Our fans enjoyed it so much. It was something I will never forget.”

Unfortunately for Burgos, he took the loss against the Reds by allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
