Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you had a great week. It’s been a busy one here. We got back from Great Homeschool Conventions in Greenville, South Carolina last Saturday.

It was so much fun seeing some of my favorite vendors and friends. I love hanging out with my friends from Geography Matters. Seriously, if you’ve ever wondered, they are the sweetest, most genuine people.

It doesn’t hurt that their booth now includes a sweet baby to snuggle. I mean, you know, if you know the right people. I’m pretty sure they don’t let just anyone snuggle him.

It was also very nice to meet a blog reader and author of Paths of Exploration Junior, Sara Butt, and discover that she doesn’t live too far from me.

I enjoyed catching up with Chad from Lexercise. If you don’t know, I give the folks at Lexercise full credit for helping Josh overcome his dyslexia and learn to read. I don’t know where we’d be without them.

I found out that they have a new basic therapy option that makes treatment more affordable for homeschooling families. I often hear that the price for professional therapy is a drawback for many single-income families. Based on my experience, it’s completely worth the price, but I think this new option is going to be very exciting for families who simply can’t afford professional therapy. There is even a discount on the basic therapy for HSLDA members!

I didn’t know the folks at the Teaching Textbooks booth, but of course, I had to stop by there. And, it was a pleasure meeting Susan Marlow, author of the Circle K books, even though I forgot to get a picture. She remembered Megan, who helped me with the reviews and had her coloring page featured on the Circle K website for quite some time.

It was also wonderful to catch up the Colleen Kessler for a bit and to finally meet Pam Barnhill (not pictured) in person.

One of our favorite parts of the trip was seeing comedian, Bob Smiley. Y’all, he is hilarious. I’ve got to say, though, it wasn’t him who said the funniest thing that left me in tears during his show. It was the two tween girls beside us.

Bob was talking about how he hates automatic toilets because if you move even a millimeter to the right or left, they flush, leaving you with a hickey. Above the audience’s laughter, I hear the two girls beside us gasp out the following conversation between fits of laughter:

Girl #1 {laughing hysterically}: What’s a hickey?

Girl #2 {barely able to talk for laughing} I don’t know!

Oh, y’all. I laughed till I cried. You’ve got to love the innocence of homeschooled twelve-year-olds.

I also geeked out a bit by insisting that we have dinner at The Cheesecake Factory because that’s where Penny works on The Big Bang Theory. Also, there isn’t a Cheesecake Factory near us and I am a fan of cheesecake, so there is that.

Brian and I got a Snicker’s cheesecake to split. Yum! I posted an extremely poorly-lit photo on Instagram and Facebook with the caption: Day-old cheesecake is hollow succor to a man bereft of ostrich.

I don’t think anyone got it. Maybe it’s because it was a misquote. It should have read, “Stale pastry is hollow succor to a man who is bereft of ostrich.” Bonus points if you get the reference!

Another highlight of my week playing a role in Megan’s BFF finally snagging a highly-sought-after Nintendo Switch. She’s been trying to get one since they were released and everyone has been sold out.

She found out that a local GameStop was getting a shipment of 5 consoles on Wednesday, but her dad had to work and her mom had to take her grandfather to the doctor. Megan asked if I would take Gianna. Of course!

We got there at 9 a.m. We would not have been in time to get one of the consoles because there were already more than five people in line waiting for the store to open at 10. However, Gianna’s boyfriend (and Josh’s BFF), Jordan, who sets the bar extremely high for boyfriends everywhere, and his dad had gotten there at 6 a.m. to hold a place in line.

Jordan wasn’t even getting the game. He was just holding a spot for Gianna – and not just any spot. Nope. He was first in line!

We had to wait forever for the UPS man who was nearly two hours late based on his normal delivery time, but the mission was a success! Gianna got a coveted Nintendo Switch and Jordan won the Boyfriend of the Year Award.

The final highlight of my week was having lunch with a friend yesterday. She is such a dear, sweet friend. It happened to be the birthday of our dear friend, Christina, who passed away several years ago. Both of us are taking steps to eat healthier, but we enjoyed a small piece of cake in honor of Christina’s birthday.

  1. What a great week! I am a novice homeschooler and I can’t tell you how uplifting it is to read your updates (and other posts) in my email. Thank you for taking the time to share them!

  2. I have never laughed so hard in my life as I did when our family saw Bob Smiley at our GHConvention a couple of years ago. AND he was so super friendly and funny afterward when our group of teens wanted their photo taken with him. I am sad I have no need to go to the Great Homeschool Convention any more, my girl graduates this year.
