Mostly, I never hear a wrong word about Essence – it’s a pretty amazing budget brand that won’t leave your pockets empty when you want to try a trend. The first thing I love from the Spring 2017 collection (apart from the Rainbow Prismatic featured earlier in the week) is the Blush Play Trio. I’m glad they’ve included the word Play because it reminds me that make up is fun. That’s what it’s for. If you felt adventurous, you could do the suggested ‘sculpting’ but frankly, these are just three decently pigmented, peachy-pink shades for cheeks that are spot on for spring and summer. They’re powdery, but not dusty and this palette is £4.

Next along is the My Must Haves Palettes – a ‘create-your-own’ system that allows you to make exactly the palette you want. I must admit, I shoved mine in rather randomly and yet, it looks fabulous! You can choose from an empty quad palette (£1.50) or one that holds eight (£2) with each individual colour costing £1.50 a pop.

There are twenty shadows to choose from or beauty tricks – lip base powder, highlighter or bronzer. So, your palette is really what you make it.

I have no complaints about the quality in the swatch – soft and blendy, but they’re not tested for longevity, and I love that pink shade (Raspberry Frosting). Don’t even think about ruling yourself out on age grounds from Essence – yes, it’s pitched young, but there’s no rules about how old you have to be or not to be to have fun.

Finally, a brief mention for the Lash Extension Mascara, £3, which I haven’t put to the test yet, and also the Korean trend inspired Cushion Eyeliner (£3) also not yet tested, but I can’t wait to dive in!

The collection is available from April at Wilko stores and Wilko.com.
