College basketball: UMass names Kelsey as head coach; FGCU's Dooley was reportedly in mix
AMHERST, Mass. — Massachusetts has named Pat Kelsey men's basketball coach.
Kelsey comes to UMass after five seasons as coach at Winthrop. He led the South Carolina school to a 102-59 record in that span and qualified for the
NCAA tournament this season with a record of 26-7. He was previously an assistant at Xavier and Wake Forest.

He replaces Derek Kellogg, who was fired earlier this month after nine seasons with the Minutemen.
Florida Gulf Coast University coach Joe Dooley's name had been mentioned in conjunction with the UMass opening.
Mass athletic director Ryan Bamford says Kelsey was selected because of his "detailed plan for every phase of our program and a passionate work ethic."
Kelsey said in a statement that he look forward to "making UMass a major factor on the national level once again."
Kelsey, a married father of three, played at Wyoming and Xavier.
