Game report: Brewers overpower Cubs

Kyle Wren is congratulated after his home run against the Cubs.

On the field:The Brewers' offense was almost as hot as the weather Saturday. Milwaukee pounded out 20 hits en route to a 13-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs in front of 10,134 fans at Maryvale Baseball Park.

Travis Shaw had three hits including a double, and Manny Piña, Kyle Wren and Dustin Houle all homered. Five players had at least two hits.

"It was a good day," manager Craig Counsell said. "Travis Shaw's definitely swinging it well. Manny Piña's really been swinging it well. He's had a good spring, for sure."

The offense trickled down once again to the Brewers' youngsters. Outfielder Trent Clark, the 2015 first-round pick who was making his major-league spring debut, singled in his first trip to the plate and then was driven in by a double off the wall in left by Isan Diaz. Mauricio Dubon then drove in Diaz with a single, capping the scoring for Milwaukee.

"It's fun bringing a new player over like Clark, who's obviously a good player," Counsell said. "We haven't seen him yet. We're getting some new guys over. Isan Diaz continues to show that opposite-field power – he's driven three balls now to the wall, off the wall or over the wall to left field. That's a rare trait."

Brent Suter (1-0) started in place of Junior Guerra, who pitched in a minor-league game, and allowed a home run while striking out three in one inning of work.

Cactus juice: Starter Wily Peralta and reliever Carlos Torres rejoined the Brewers earlier in the week after their stints in the World Baseball Classic, and a couple more members of the Brewers will be trickling back in over the coming days. Utility man Hernan Perez and first-base coach Carlos Subero, members of Team Venezuela, are expected to return Tuesday after Milwaukee's off-day. Second baseman Jonathan Villar potentially could miss almost another week if the Dominican Republic beat Team USA late Saturday night. "We're missing two big players here," Counsell said, referring to Perez and Villar. "I'm anxious to get those guys back at this point. We are two weeks away from opening day."
