Is it okay to be rather irritated when you see a lovely thing that isn’t being done as well as it should be? I love the look of the Baylis & Harding Linen Rose & Cotton Candles – they’re in pastel, heritage type shades of just-off ballet pink, off-white and a sort of neutral shade that Farrow & Ball would call ‘Woven Linen’ or such. I want all of these colours on my walls! So, the three piece collection makes a treat for the eyes; calm and stylish, looking far more expensive than they actually are.
The problem I have with these is that they are so lightly scented that all I think I could smell was the heat of the candles burning – and I had them all on the burn at the same time. The name suggests that it’s not a heavy scent, that it’s supposed to be a clean nuance but if my stuck my head in my linen cupboard I’d have more of an olfactory experience. It’s like buying a beautiful bouquet of flowers and then discovering you can only smell the paper they were wrapped in – the point of a scented candle is that it’s…er, scented. Baylis & Harding is a Brit brand – I wish they’d be a bit more generous on the actual perfume. I quite often use their hand washes and they seem to be a bit more lively, so while I love the look of these, I’m disappointed. If you are highly scent sensitive or a blood hound, finding gentle, non-intrusive scents can be a problem, so I guess on that level, you could tick a box.

I find I’m often disappointed with Baylis & Harding products. They seem to spend all their efforts on the look, usually in the style of Molton Brown, but what’s inside never lives up to expectations
