The Dallas Cowboys are continuing to maintain their own, re-signing their 2015 leading rusher RB Darren McFadden to a one year deal.

McFadden missed most of the 2016 season due to an offseason injury, but was effective when available at the end of the year, both in the running and returning games. Considering the re-activation of McFadden cost Cowboys Twitter their beloved Darius Jackson, it is certainly good to see the Cowboys keep him around for another year.

This news comes just hours after we learned about the departure of former third-down/pass game running back Lance Dunbar to the Los Angeles Rams.

It is now also fair to question the future of running back Alfred Morris as well. Originally thought of as the perfect fit for the Cowboys zone blocking scheme, Morris just couldn’t re-gain his old self in 2016. Morris was even a healthy-scratch for the Cowboys Divisional Playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

Once healthy, Darren McFadden was a clear upgrade over both Morris and Dunbar, and a solid number two running back to spell Ezekiel Elliott.

It will certainly be good to have Darren McFadden back for the 2017 season.

  1. Good move We needed him back because bringing back Morris and Dunbar wasn’t even in the question Im still a little salty about Darius Jackson but We should look for another Darius Jackson in the draft because McFadden is only on a one year deal but otherwise a good resign

  2. I expected that the Jones’s and JG wanted McFadden back. He could probably earn more and start elsewhere, but perhaps sees the great utility of staying in Dallas:

    – Career extended beyond the few left if a starter
    – Big chance to get a ring

The Cowboys sink or swim on the run attack. It helps Dak and the defense, and allows Dallas to dictate to opponents. If the Jones’s, I treat it like my centerpiece – so I make sure I reload on the OL and have firepower behind Elliott.

Moving parts on the OL right now, but the 3 #1’s are all in place. And I see Free’s retirement as a chance to upgrade with someone more athletic. Not overly concerned there.
