UpVest Indiana sets goals for Indiana infrastructure

A senior director with Indiana’s checkoff organizations says the need for maintained infrastructure is increasingly more important as farmers face continued tight margins.

Ed Ebert, senior director of grain production and utilization with the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and the Indiana Soybean Alliance tells Brownfield farmers compete on a global marketplace.  “And certainly having the first stage – or that first step from the farm-gate to their first market, whether it is a domestic user or whether it’s an export facility, is critical in them maintaining the ability to profitably grow these crops into the future,” he says.

The checkoff organizations have launched UpVest Indiana, a joint campaign to highlight the importance of rural roads and bridges for not only today – but the future viability of Indiana’s economy.  “The goal is to educate stakeholders in direct transportation resource utilization and legislators and folks at the state government level, when we’re looking at resources at the state to improve this infrastructure,” he says.

Ebert says a recent study from the Indiana University Public Policy Institute estimates the funding needed to repair Indiana’s rural roads to an acceptable level will cost more than 6-billion-dollars over the next 20 years.
