Camp report: Brewers lose slugfest to Dodgers

Brewers prospect Ryan Cordell had a big week at Colorado Springs.

On the field: The Milwaukee Brewers' offense pushed eight runs across a day after being shut out in their Cactus League opener, but it still wasn't enough as they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-8, at Maryvale Baseball Park. Starter Wily Peralta, preparing for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, allowed one hit and two walks while striking out one in a two-inning outing. "I think Wily did fine," manager Craig Counsell said. "A couple of baserunners but he held them well. That's what's supposed to happen. You're supposed to get a little feel for yourself the first time out there. Being able to make an adjustment." Peralta was helped by catcher Jett Bandy, who threw out a pair of would-be basestealers in the first inning. "Jett threw out runners last year at a pretty good rate," said Counsell. "It's a good friend for a pitcher, that's for sure."

Milwaukee battled back from a 7-2 deficit to take the lead in the sixth on a great slide at home by Brett Phillips. The Dodgers then hit a trio of solo homers – one in the seventh and two in the eighth – to win it. Rookie Ryan Cordell had Milwaukee's lone homer, a two-run shot in the third.

Cactus juice: The Brewers have hired Robinzon Diaz as their second bullpen catcher. Diaz, 33, played a total of 44 games in the major leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates from 2008-'09 and spent 2013-'15 in the Brewers' minor-league system, rising as high as Class AAA. Diaz joins Marcus Hanel, the Racine native who's entering his 18th year as a bullpen catcher with Milwaukee.

Weather: Sunny, 64.

Scoreboard: Dodgers 10, Brewers 8. Record: 0-2. Monday: Brewers at Rangers, 2:05 p.m., Milwaukee RHP Junior Guerra vs. Texas RHP Eddie Gamboa.

Countdown: 35 days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
