Camp report: Pitchers outshine the hitters

Brewers starter Taylor Jungmann lasted four innings Thursday, April 21 giving up three runs on four hits and walking six batters. The Brewers lost to the Twins, 8-1.

On the field: The Brewers managed only four hits — all singles — in their Cactus League opener, losing to the Los Angeles Angels, 2-0, in Tempe. The pitchers stole the show on both sides, with Brewers reliever Carlos Torres already looking sharp with two hitless innings, including four strikeouts. Taylor Jungmann, attempting to bounce back from a rough 2016 season, faced three hitters and recorded three groundball outs.

"We pitched very well today," manager Craig Counsell said. "(Jungmann) had a nice curveball today, which is probably the last step you'd expect. His fastball has been crisp and he has shown confidence in it. We're going to extend (Torres) a little bit. He was very efficient today. His stuff was good both innings."

Cactus juice: The Brewers signed 11 more pre-arbitration players to salaries for 2017: C Jeff Bandy, RHP Michael Blazek, CF Keon Broxton, RHPs Tyler Cravy, Zach Davies, Taylor Jungmann, Corey Knebel and Damien Magnifico, RF Domingo Santana, OFs Brett Phillips and Michael Reed. Only INF Jonathan Villar and RHP Jimmy Nelson remain without salary figures on the 40-man roster. They already are considered signed after being tendered a contract with only the salary to be announced.

Weather: Sunny, 62.

Scoreboard: Angels 2, Brewers 0. Record: 0-1. Sunday: Brewers vs. Dodgers, 2:05 p.m. Milwaukee RHP Wily Peralta vs. Los Angeles LHP Rich Hill.

Countdown: 36 days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
