UW 3, Minnesota 2: Badgers tied for first in Big Ten

MINNEAPOLIS - Welcome to first place in the Big Ten, UW men’s hockey team.

The Badgers scored three goals in the second period for a 3-2 victory over Minnesota at Mariucci Arena on Friday.

The victory lifted UW (18-10-1, 11-4-0-0 Big Ten) into a tie atop the conference standings with the Golden Gophers (20-9-2, 11-4-0-0) with five games remaining in the regular season.

The Gophers scored 28 seconds into the game. 

But the Badgers responded with their big second period. Trent Frederic (3:42) scored first, followed by Aidan Cavallini (7:22) and Ryan Wagner (19:04). 

The Badgers were strong on the defensive end, with goaltender Jack Berry turning away 36 shots, including 17 in the third period as the Gophers hunted an equalizer.

UW’s Peter Tischke was credited with 11 blocks, including nine in the third. The Badgers had 18 blocks in the final period.
