Christian Coleman in form on Day 1 of SEC indoor track
On an otherwise slow Friday for Tennessee, sprinter Christian Coleman was in good form as the SEC indoor track and field championships got underway in Nashville.
Coleman easily had the fastest qualifying time in the 60 meter prelims to advance to Saturday's finals. Coleman was clocked in 6.54 seconds, the only one of three Vols to advance in the event.
Later in the evening, Coleman posted the No. 2 qualifying time in the 200 meters, 20.72.
Coleman, the defending SEC champion in the 60, made the U.S. Olympic team last summer, running a leg on the 4x100 relay.
Georgia leads the men's race after four of 17 events with 30 points. Tennessee is 10th with 2.5 points. Freshman Darryl Sullivan tied for the sixth in the high jump, clearing 7 feet, 1/4 inch, in his first SEC competition.
Arkansas is in command of the women's scoring with 48.5 points after five events. Tennessee has four points for 11th place. Stamatia Scarvelis, a transfer from UCLA, claimed fifth place in the shot put at 53 feet, 8.5 inches, UT's only score.
The other UT man advancing to Saturday beside Coleman was Zach Long in the mile. Long's 4:08.63 time was fourth-fastest in qualifying.
Shania Collins, a transfer from Texas, qualified fourth in the women's 200 in 23.50. She's the only Tennessee woman who advanced.
The Vols came up empty in the men's 400-meter qualifying. Nathan Strother, an indoor and outdoor All-American in 2016, finished 17th in 47.18.
