SEMO dedicates indoor cattle feeding building

A cattle feeding facility has been dedicated at Southeast Missouri State University and will be used to study the economic results of covered feeding.

Researchers will compare beef production in the new 45-hundred square foot facility to open feeding areas.

They will track the cattle’s feed to gain ratio, behavior and welfare, and, meat quality.

The facility is funded by a Missouri Beef Initiative grant.

It is one of several indoor cattle feeding experiments in the state aimed at assessing the economic viability of feeding more cattle in Missouri for finishing.

Missouri is a leading cow-calf state but weaned calves are sent to Kansas for final feeding and slaughter.
