The UWM Panthers mascot rounds the bases at Miller Park in a 2012 appearance.

On the field: The Milwaukee Brewers held a short practice Thursday to end the workouts-only portion of spring camp. They play their first exhibition game Friday against UW-Milwaukee and manager Craig Counsell said everyone is looking forward to that change.

“We enter the next phase of spring training,” Counsell said. “There has been good intent to the first nine days. It creates a different schedule, which we’re all happy about, and excited to get started with it."

Cactus juice: Lefty Brent Suter is in his first big-league camp and he had no trouble identifying one major change from minor-league camp: breakfast. Beyond buffet items, the players have a couple of cooks on hand for made-to-order hot entrees. “The breakfast is unbelievably good here,” he said. “Over there, they do hot breakfast occasionally. But, normally, it was things like hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, bagels, waffles that you can toast up.  Nothing like this. We have a buffet that’s unreal. Living the big-league life is nice.”

Weather: Sunny, 65 degrees.

Scoreboard: First exhibition game Friday against UW-Milwaukee at Maryvale Baseball Park, 2:05 p.m. CT. First Cactus League game Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels in Tempe, 2:10 p.m.
