Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy looks on as pitcher Hiram Burgos looks to home plate, during spring training drills last week in Phoenix.

On the field: Manager Craig Counsell announced that Hiram Burgos would start against UW-Milwaukee on Friday. Burgos, who will be pitching for Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, is expected to be used for only an inning against the Panthers and then followed by several other pitchers. The Brewers will follow a similar strategy Saturday when they open Cactus League play against the Angels in Tempe. Pitchers also ramped up their preparations on the back fields, as 10 more threw live batting practice. Counsell said that number would be upped to 13-14 on Wednesday.

Cactus juice: Equipment vendors bringing their various wares through the Maryvale clubhouse is a common sight on spring mornings. Gloves, bats, spikes, apparel, etc. are peddled on a regular basis, with company representatives answering questions, taking orders and distributing swag. On Tuesday it was glove manufacturer Wilson. Infielder Jonathan Villar, who has a contract with the company, picked up a couple new gloves made in the Brewers' retro colors to go along with the special red, white and blue number he had made for the WBC. Outfielder Brett Phillips, meanwhile, is breaking in a new game glove that comes complete with a Brewers logo stitched into the thumb.

Weather: Sunny, 72.
