January milk production up 2.7%

The USDA reports milk production in the top 23 U.S. states during January 2017 was 16.999 billion pounds, up 2.7% from January 2016. Production per cow was a new all-time high for the month at 1,967 pounds per cow, and the herd was 8.688 million head, up 67,000 on the year.

California produced the most milk and had the biggest herd, followed by Wisconsin. Colorado had the highest per cow average, followed very closely by Michigan.

USDA’s February milk production numbers are out March 20th.

January milk production numbers for Brownfield states in top 23 production states:

Illinois: 164 million pounds, unchanged from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,765 pounds, up 20; herd of 93,000 head, down 1,000

Indiana: 359 million pounds, up 2% from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,930 pounds, up 15; herd of 186,000 head, up 2,000

Iowa: 433 million pounds, up 3.8% from January 2016; average production per cow of 2,015 pounds, up 30; herd of 215,000 head, up 5,000

Michigan: 927 million pounds, up 3.5% from January 2016; average production per cow of 2,180 pounds, up 10; herd of 425,000 head, up 12,000

Minnesota: 828 million pounds, up 1.7% from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,800 pounds, up 30; herd of 460,000 head, unchanged

Ohio: 466 million pounds, down 0.6% from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,780 pounds, up 15; herd of 262,000 head, down 4,000

South Dakota: 218 million pounds, up 2.8% from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,875 pounds, down 15; herd of 116,000 head, up 4,000

Wisconsin: 2.541 billion pounds, up 1% from January 2016; average production per cow of 1,985 pounds, up 20; herd of 1.28 million head, unchanged
