The Detroit Lions added a former coordinator to their coaching staff Tuesday, hiring George Godsey.

Godsey, the offensive coordinator in Houston the past two seasons, will join Detroit’s staff as a defensive assistant who also will manage special projects. The title is similar to the one held by Randy Edsall, who left the Lions after last season to become the head coach at UConn.

Former Houston Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey, left, is joining the Lions coaching staff as a defensive assistant who also will handle special projects.

Prior to joining the Texans, Godsey worked three years with the New England Patriots, first as a low-level offensive assistant then as the team’s tight end coach.

A former college quarterback at Georgia Tech, Godsey has only coached on the offensive side of the ball.
