Camp report: Brewers hold workout between rain showers

Craig Counsell looks on during a practice Thursday in Phoenix.

On the field:  The Brewers found a window between heavy rain showers in the early morning and afternoon to hold a shortened workout on the field, the first full-squad session of the spring. Of primary consideration was keeping pitchers on their proper schedule. With more rain expected overnight, the decision was made to move back the Sunday workout by two hours to give crews more time to work on the practice fields.

Cactus juice:  After giving by all accounts an inspirational message to his players before the workout, manager Craig Counsell told reporters, “I give the players a lot of credit, because, to me, they’ve set the standards. They’re pushing the standards to a higher place.” Asked how he knows the players have higher standards, Counsell smiled and said, “I just know.”

Weather:  Rainy, 57.

Scoreboard:  First exhibition game on Friday against UW-Milwaukee at Maryvale Baseball Park, 2:05 p.m. Central.

Countdown:  43 days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
