MILWAUKEE BREWERS

Camp report: Pitchers will throw even if rain comes

Brewers pitchers and catchers will have some cover if poor weather occurs.

On the field: The Brewers’ first full-squad workout scheduled for Saturday could become a washout as heavy rains are expected. The forecast for Sunday is similar, but manager Craig Counsell said there’s nothing that can be done about it. “We’ll have priorities and the pitchers getting their throwing in is the priority,” he said. “For the first 10 days, the priority is to keep pitchers on their schedule.” There is cover over the bullpen mounds, so throwing sessions should go on as planned.

Cactus juice: Outfield prospect Brett Phillips became widely known last spring for his unique laughing spells, many of which made the rounds via videos on social media. When he attended an Increase Conference for Christian athletes after the season in Orlando, he was approached by Pittsburgh star Andrew McCutchen. “Are you that guy with the funny laugh?” McCutchen asked. Phillips said, “Yes,” and of course, started laughing.

Weather: Increasing clouds, 63 degrees.

Scoreboard: First exhibition game at 2:05 p.m. (CT) Feb. 24 against UW-Milwaukee at Maryvale Baseball Park.

Countdown: 45 days until opening day, April 3, against Colorado at Miller Park.
