Commuters sloshed their way to work Wednesday, some through rain, some through sleet and some through snow as winter weather returned to southern Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service in Sullivan.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Milwaukee and much of the rest of Wisconsin until midnight, the weather service said.

Morning snowfall ranged from a trace to five inches, with the heaviest snows from Madison north to Fond du Lac, Berlin, Montello and the Wisconsin Dells.

Temperatures will remain in the low to mid-30s, so expect slush and wet snow to accumulate, causing hazardous driving conditions throughout the day and into the night.

On-and-off light rain and snow will change over to snow during the afternoon and evening. Expect accumulations of around an inch or two in southeast Wisconsin to around eight inches north of Madison.

Things are much, much worse to the west and north. The latest forecast for the Dells area and west is for 3-5 inches and there are big delays on I-39/90 southbound west of Madison due to an accident.
