Two teenagers fleeing police in a car taken in an armed robbery were killed Friday night when the car collided with another vehicle on Milwaukee's north side, police said.

A 15-year-old boy died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 8 p.m. at N. 31st St. and W. Capitol Drive, according to a news release from the Milwaukee Police Department. A 17-year-old boy was taken to a hospital, where he died of injuries suffered in the crash, police said.

The stolen Volkswagen Passat was taken shortly after 7 p.m. during an armed robbery at N. 29th and W. Villard Ave., investigators said.

Police spotted the car about 8 p.m. near N. Teutonia Ave. and W. Cornell St. and attempted to pull it over, however the driver refused to stop.

As the officers pursued the vehicle south on N. 31st St., the driver ran a red light at Capitol Drive, where the vehicle was struck by a Chevy Cavalier before striking a light pole, police said.

A handgun was recovered from the Volkswagen, investigators said. The driver of the Chevy was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Milwaukee Police Department policy allows officers to engage in vehicle pursuits when they know or have probable cause to believe any occupants were involved in a violent felony, including armed robbery. The fatal crash occurred about one mile from where the pursuit began.

The incident remains under investigation.
