Wintry mix moves into southeast Wisconsin

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Slick roads and crashes are being reported throughout southeastern Wisconsin.

As the weather system that coated parts of the Great Plains with ice moved into the area Monday morning, places like Waukesha County saw slippery conditions and reports of minor crashes scattered countywide. Walworth County officials reported similar conditions, but added that the work of highway crews seemed to be paying off.

"It's not as crazy as it could be," one Walworth dispatcher said.

The storm is expected to switch to rain as Monday wears on, according to the National Weather Service. The weather system iced over much of Kansas and Missouri on Saturday, but it's not expected to hit Wisconsin with the same punch.

The dismal conditions are expected to subside by Tuesday, followed by above-average temperatures reaching highs in the upper 40s by Friday.

As the freezing rain moved into the far southern part of the state, a number of schools in Walworth, Racine and Kenosha Counties closed for the day.
