Firefighters rescued one person from a burning house on Milwaukee north's side, officials said Thursday.

The fire was reported about 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of N. 16 St. and firefighters saw heavy smoke when they arrived, said Deputy Fire Chief Terry Lintonen.

Three other people inside the house were able to safely evacuate, he said.

The fire resulted in about $40,000 worth of damage to the two-story home and $15,000 for the contents, Lintonen said.

The cause remains under investigation and the house did not have working smoke detectors, he said.
