Winter parking regulations start Thursday

Winter parking regulations take effect Thursday so streets can be ready for city plows.

Winter parking regulations for the City of Milwaukee go into effect Thursday and will remain in effect until March 1, according to the Department of Public Works.

Overnight parking is prohibited on major arterial streets and bus routes, even though signs to that effect are not posted, according to a news release from the DPW.

With exceptions, most residential streets require alternate side night parking, but drivers are encouraged to check posted signs for winter parking regulations before parking, according to the release.

Some city streets are included in the 48-hour parking exception street program.

Residents who park on 48-hour parking exception streets may park overnight on both sides of the street unless the DPW announces that snow plowing or other public works operations will be conducted overnight.

When this announcement is made, residents must move their vehicles to the correct side of the street – odd side of the street on an odd-numbered day (before midnight) or the even side of the street on an even-numbered day (before midnight) - for legal overnight parking between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to the DPW.

Residents are encouraged to sign up to receive Snow Mobile 48-Hour Parking Exception Text Alert messages in which subscribers will receive a text message on their cell phones alerting them that a DPW operation has been called, and that all vehicles must be moved to the correct side of the street.

Residents who prefer an email message may sign up for an E-Notify 48-hour parking exception email message that will transmit the same information.

To sign up for either or both alerts, go to milwaukee.gov/mpw or call (414) 286-CITY for assistance.

The DPW reminds city residents that posted parking rules take precedence, and that more information is available by visiting http://mpw.milwaukee.gov/services/winterregs or by calling (414) 286-CITY (2489).
