Mint Gives Official Notice: 2016-Dated ASE and AGB Coin Production Is Finished

Update: In a Dec. 6 press release, the Mint says it has notified APs that “The United States Mint has sold out of 2016-dated American Eagle One, Quarter, and Tenth Ounce Gold Bullion Coins. We will continue to take orders for the remaining inventories of American Eagle One-Half Ounce and American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Bullion Coins. We will begin taking orders for 2017-dated American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins on Monday, January 9, 2017.”

As has been expected for the last few weeks, the Mint has formally announced to its authorized purchasers (APs) that it has finished producing all 2016-dated American Eagle Silver and American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins for the year. The Mint will continue to sell the remaining inventories until they are depleted. The Mint says it is also in the process of winding up production of 2016-dated American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins, which will likewise be sold until gone.

Elsewhere in the Mint’s press release, the Mint says it will start accepting orders for the 2017-dated American Eagle Silver, Gold and American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins on Monday, January 9, 2017.  The 2017-dated silver and gold bullion coins will be launched on an unallocated basis. Orders for 2017-dated American Eagle Platinum Bullion Coins will begin to be accepted in late January.  More details will be provided at a later date.   ❑

Even with over a month of production stashed away, I wonder if the mint will have enough of the 2017 ASE in stock to meet demand.

  2. cagcrisp says

How did the Mint manage to lose approximately $1,249,187.50 by not using a proper HHL to start on both the Standing Liberty quarter (SLQ) and the Walking Liberty Half (WLH)?

Both the SLQ and WLH have NO HHL at this time.

Assuming some facts that will only happen under an ideal scenario (my scenario). Assuming the Mint is able to sell ALL 100,000 Standing Liberty Quarter and Assuming the Mint is able to sell ALL 70,000 Walking Liberty Half dollars without any other Gold price adjustment.

In total the Mint Sold 78,464 SLQ’s @ $485.00 by week ending October 9th. On Wednesday October 12th the Mint lowered prices to $472.50. The week ending October 16th there were a total of 406 sales made and I am using ALL sales being recorded after the price decrease.

By November 13th there were a Total of 2,169 SLQ’s sold after October 9th and I am assuming ALL sales were recorded at the $472.50 price.

On November 16th the Mint lowered prices on the SLQ to $460.00. Since November 13th there have been a Total of 2,383 SLQ’s sold and I am assuming ALL sales at the $460.00 price.

On November 27th the Mint has recorded TOTAL SLQ sales of 83,016. For my analysis I am using the MOST favorable outcome for my position:

    78,464 SLQ’s sold @ $485.00
    2,169 SLQ’s sold @ $472.50
    2,383 SLO’s sold @ $460.00
    TOTAL SLQ’s sold 83,016 for $40,176,072.50

IF the Mint has a SO of 100,000 with all remaining coins being sold for $447.50 (16,984 x $447.50 = $7,600,340.00) then we will have TOTAL sales of 100,000 with TOTAL revenue of $47,776,412.50

IF ALL 100,000 SLQ’s had the proper HHL to start will there isn’t a doubt in my mind that ALL 100,000 would have been sold for $48,500,000.00.

That’s a difference of $723,587.50 from projected to what we are currently looking at. (Assuming all 100,000 SLQ’s are sold at some point.)

Using the exact same format for the Walking Liberty Half. My Assumption would be that IF a proper HHL for the SLQ had been used then the entirety of 100,000 SLQ’s would have been sold prior to launch of the WLH and that the same proper HHL for the WLH would be used and once again you would have already had a SO for the WLH.

48,976 WLH have been sold @ $865.00 through November 27th. Assuming a SO of all 70,000 with no Gold price adjustment that would leave 21,024 WLH’s to be sold at $840.00. The difference would be $525,600.00

$723,587.50 for the SLQ and $525,600.00 for the WLH and you get TOTAL $1,249,187.50…

Thinking about ordering 2 more WLH so I can have 3 in original mint packaging and send in 2 for grading, what do you guys think?

  6. cagcrisp says

@Ryan”Thinking about ordering 2 more WLH so I can have 3 in original mint packaging and send in 2 for grading, what do you guys think?”

Unless you’re afraid of a sellout, why not wait? For the Winged Head Liberty and the SLQ it’s a better bet buying a Graded coin off the bay than taking the chance on grading and expense of trying to get one Graded. Just go to the bay and look up completed sale of each and see if you think it wouldn’t be better to wait on buying a graded coin.

The HHL just came off Monday and with the price drop today I would see what the Mint’s sales numbers are next Tuesday. If dealers are getting in big time, today will be the day…

  7. Ryan says

Good point about waiting and just buying graded, the thing that bugs me about that is the dealers never pay a little bit extra to get the scratch proof cases! Makes me mad every time I buy one that’s new and the case is a little scratched! My OCD kicking in I guess

  8. Ryan says

I bought some Lewis and Clark nickels a few months ago , the cases were so horribly scratched that I paid to mail them in and realab them in scratch proof, makes no sense dollar wise but I love those coins and they are inexpensive enough that they sit on my desk.

  9. says

@ cagcrisp….you ought to be the manager of the Mint employee (s), that made those decisions that cost the Mint 1.25 million in lost revenue.

Then, point this out in their annual performance review and explain to them “this is why you are only getting a 20% bonus this year instead of the usual 30%.”

  10. So Krates says

    *For Entertainment Purposes Only*

I heard through the grapevine a dramatic drop in PMs is due to hit tomorrow. I have not changed any behavior or plans based on this rumor and do NOT recommend anyone else do so. Anybody heard anything spooky for Thurs?

  11. cagcrisp says

$1,170.00 is a key support level. After hours it breached $1,170.00. Next support level is $1,150.00.

Gold has taken out every support level for 3 weeks.

    I don’t do technical analysis…

  12. Barry says

@SoKrates- I read two weeks ago that that PM’s would drop a week after Thanksgiving so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a drop tomorrow.

  13. says

@cagcrisp…so are you saying you look at fundamental analysis only.

@Barry, So Krates…where have you heard this…where is this grapevine?

I do think that fundamentally, as long as the dollar index stays above 100, pm’s will slowly trend downward.

Gold dropped to almost $1162 tonight and has bounced back to near $1170….but I don’t see anything that would cause a substantial drop in gold tomorrow…i.e., below $1150.

I think the “Trump” stock market rally is based on a lot of positive optimism, but it’s too early to tell exactly how his administration will effect the markets long term. Fewer regulations will help small businesses as will a reduction in the corporate tax rate for all corporations. He was successful in getting Carrier A/C to keep it’s 1000 jobs in Indiana. However, I think he had some leverage in that deal…Carrier’s parent company (can’t remember the name) builds engines for US Fighter jets, and thus relies on government contracts for a lot of their income….so, that might of had an influence on Carrier’s decision.

But there are a lot of unknowns regarding trade deals and how that will impact GDP, interest rates, etc.

So, I’m in a wait and see mode for the time being….markets can change quickly up or down.

Sorry to go off into politics, but they will have a big impact on stocks and pm’s….just my thoughts

  14. Terry says

johnaz says “That guy with the gold bucket is the mint gold dimes they had left.” You are a funny guy my friend.

  15. cagcrisp says

@Steve I understand the basis for technical analysis, I just don’t use it. I concentrate on a top down approach for the entire economy and then narrow it down to specific industries. In 2016 90% of my trades were in the biggest oil companies and the biggest banks. Trade the same stocks over and over. Seldom use shorts because I believe the entire industries were undervalued. I believe that interest rates were going up all year and I played a range for a barrel of oil. In and out in and out…

Just received email from U.S. Mint that “Your next U.S. Mint Shipment!”

The email is dtd. 1 Dec 2016 @0322HR.

The ‘order details’ advise that I am being charged: $4.95 for S & H for a coin that costs: $149.95.

The coin is the 5 oz Moultrie ‘puck’ that I automatically order from mint via subscription.

US Mint email dated 25 Nov. 2016 advises, “Spend $100.00 or more Get Free Budget Shipping”.

If I recall the same thing happened last year & when I called, the US Mint operator advised that there existed a ‘software’ problem as it pertained to orders involving subscriptions.

I wonder if I am misinterpreting the situation or stuck in a ‘bait & switch’ scenario. Certainly, it could not be because of indifference or incompetence or failure to correct repetition of unintended consequences.

A year to fix a software problem seem a bit lengthy.

In my Above post about trading oil stocks, I Completely missed the move in oil yesterday. I was 100% Out of oil. I did 2 X short oil yesterday morning and as Dr Phil says “how did that work for you?”

    Not so well…

  19. says

@ cagcrisp…the jump in oil yesterday surprised me too….and this morning it is above $50.

Gas yesterday at my local QT was $1.99/gal. Probably up 15 cents soon.

  20. cagcrisp says

@Steve, I would think $.15-$.20 should be about right

Except IF the OPEC deal holds, this isn’t a one off like all the rest have been for the past year…

  21. So Krates says

    I filled up too @ $1.789/g. That’s crazy low.

Wish it would go way up so all these idiots would stop idling their engines for 15 minutes every morning it’s below 50 degrees. I often feel like jumping in these unmanned idling cars and parking them around the block.

  22. So Krates says

Found a screw driver bit, watch battery, key ring, and……..one 1963 silver dime at the Coinstar last night. woo hoo

  23. So Krates says

I’m kinda on the same page with the so called “burnished” ASE. A slim chance is better than none but I just don’t like the product much. I don’t care what anyone says – it’s a clean bullion Eagle with a W. I find older “W”s once in a while when buying bullion ASE rolls. That’s how close they are. It is not that rare that people mix em in with regular tubes (including dealers). The free ship does help though….maybe one or two can’t hurt, hmm

  24. data dave says

My question on the burnished ASE is how many did the Mint make for the initial run. Because it is so late in the year, they will not be able to make a second run. Based on previous years, they probably ordered 200K to 250K of them.

  25. earthling says

I just checked on my Moonlight Mint Order , it shipped! Don’t know when it shipped but I’m about to head out to the Post Office Box and check it out.

If the Morgans look good I might order a few more.

  26. Louis Golino, Author says

data dave- good question and applies to the proofs too. there is a chance both coins end up being low mingtage, but without knowing how many they made and plan to make before year’s end, it is hard to say.

  27. Louis Golino, Author says

not much talk about the $5 gold NPS, which has such low sales and we are a couple weeks from the end. plus price was reduced yesterday.

  28. earthling says

The problem with trying to catch the low mintage issues? Every year the mintages keep dropping even lower. Soon there will be a multitude of Coins with very low mintages. What do resellers do then?

Just hope you have things in rare plastic with rare labels. Even better, hope you have a rare autopenned signature.

And a big bag of hopium might help also.

    LOL

  29. A&L Futures says

APMEX has a PRESALE of 2016-W (First Strike) Burnished Silver American Eagles – Lettered Edge (PCGS SP-69’s) for $54.99 (via Check/Wire), or $57.28 (CC/PayPal). Or you could pick-up the SP-70 version for $69.99/$72.91.

Clearly, this release offers little (in profit) for those seeking self-certification thru TPGs.

DISCLAIMER: I do not endorse, nor work for APMEX. I’m simply sharing what I believe others will find interesting.

  30. Mike in NY says

I ordered some burnished ASEs to go with their proof counterparts. Only one more item to pick up this year – the Fort Moultrie ATB next week. Between the C&C sets, the Platinum Proof, ASE proofs, the Mark Twain/NPS commemoratives, the Centennial Gold coins, previous ATBs, etc it has been an expensive year. Based on what has been announced for 2017 it looks like I will be spending much less at the US Mint next year.

  31. Mike in NY says

The best purchase from the mint this year was the Liberty Silver Medals. Glad I was able to pick up 2 of each.

  32. Ikaika says

If I can purchase a 70 grade coin close to the US Mint price I normally would. However, in the case of the 30th Anniversary ASE’s it is impossible to read the edge lettering from the holder. I got both proof and uncirculated in OGP.

  33. dave says

    @mike in ny,

totally agree with you mike best deal of the year was those liberty medals was also able to get 4 very easy no waiting no crash at all, best “Under The Radar”deal as well – sure something like that wont happen again

No issue @ mint @ all…..they will be there for a bit I would suspect. Have to also agree on NO BU $5, it has low @’s but are there even 5,000 serious gold commem collectors left (not for the gold for the collector value…) >??

  37. Erik H says

I checked out a gold WLH at a LCS today. I must say that eagle on the reverse looked really nice (if only it was bigger).

The mint should have put the original WLH reverse onto the 30th anniversary ASE that would have been winner for sure.

  38. Bigguy says

I,am keeping an eye on the burnished eagles, could be a better year for them, would not surprise me with some of the tricks the mint pulls, that in a couple of weeks they say they stopped production, would not be the first time they have done something like that at the end of the year

@RSF and @Numismatrix, if/when you order the lens, please let us know how it works out!

Well, the ordering was easy and the delivery was prompt.

The magic ‘stick to the phone lens feature’ seems to work, but whether it will stick after repeated on-off cycles is the key to their worth long term. I’m doubtful.

As a camera lens – the 15x microscope might be the most useful. The 4x macro lens is hard to keep the subject in focus. It will need to be rested on something 4cm thick to get usable pictures consistently. They both require the phone to be held amazingly close to the subject, making it hard to light the subject adequately. (especially the 15x) The picture quality with the macro lens is ok – similar to my phone camera’s pics enlarged a little.

I love simple and effective technology. I’ll probably be able to find a use for them at some point, so for what they cost, I guess they’re worth it.

  41. DBR says

    @ Mike in NY

I agree, it’s been an expensive year. I wanted to purchase at times the 3-piece NPS commemorative set, but I didn’t. I only purchased the silver dollar NPS coins. I saved my money for the gold centennial design coins 1916-2016.

All in all, I’m happy with the mint”s offerings this year. I’d like a burnished 2016 ASE W but I can’t remember how many of the proof versions I’ve bought, Time to check.

  42. Ryan says

    @dbr

Only 200, I guess that’s why, even the silver one is expensive that’s $149 I think that has a mintage of 400. I don’t know anything about these just saw them tonight, anybody know anything? Gimmick medal?? It says it’s the same design that came out 130 years ago, now I’m lusting after this lol

  43. So Krates says

Well, so much for the grapevine. The PMs were basically flat today except for some Pd profit taking which was closing in on $800/oz. Silver seemed extra volatile but ended up where it started.

@RSF, thanks for the update. I’m thinking of compiling a few DIY cellphone-camera hacks at some point and sharing them with readers. I’ve done a fair amount of amateur coin photography, and I’m convinced there’s a way to get around the obstacles of close-up cell-phone photography — lighting, of course, being a major issue. With a full-size setup, you can use a ring flash to evenly light your coins. I’m wondering if something like this LED ring light (https://goo.gl/GuC8aB) might work with a cell-phone setup. It’s being marketed for selfies, but it looks like it can be used for normal-facing photos as well. In fact, I’ve just talked myself into getting one.

  46. Mint News Blog says

Fans of ASE Proof and burnished coins might like a piece Ken Potter wrote for the Numismatic News site. Some enterprising individuals have figured out a way to trick out bullion ASEs to look like Reverse Proof coins. I’ve posted a link in the sidebar for those who might be interested.

  47. Mint News Blog says

@RSF, part 2 — The Internet, sensing my interest, just lobbed this into an advertisement: https://goo.gl/cIpu2o. Combined with the earlier-mentioned “selfie ring light” or other DIY lighting device, this might be a winner. (Just wish it were as inexpensive as the self-stick lenses…)

Looks like the 2017 Native American dollar design was announced. Will this program go on indefinitely? I thought it was tied to the Presidential dollar program in some way.

Mint is going to miss the revenue from the dollar program. With $20 million a year in sales and a cost of $2M, that has to be one of the better non PM products.

  49. Blair J. Tobler says

@ data dave – the only tie to the Presidential dollars was that through the end of the Presidential series, the people or events depicted on the Native American dollars would be presented in chronological order. After the end of the Presidential series, the events on the Native American series can be in any order.

  52. Dustyroads says

It’s possible that the uncirculated ( burnished) ASE’s will total less than the 2013’s, but not enough to appreciate in price much. I thought the 2013’s would see a nice appreciation, so I stocked up on 70’s. I was wrong about that. It now looks like the burnished ASE’s will have to accomplish a fairly wide spread to mean anything in the way of dollar appreciation. Do I think the Mint will make a new low? Not with this director I don’t.
