College basketball: FSW's Tremell Murphy named Player of Week

Florida SouthWestern State freshman Tremell Murphy was named NJCAA Region 8 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

The Griffith, Indiana, native averaged 27.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 0.5 blocks in two games in the Miami Dade Tournament. The freshman also shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37) from the floor, 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the charity stripe and knocked down one of his two attempts from three-point range.

In FSW’s 105-99 win over Miami Dade on Nov. 18, Murphy recorded a double-double with 33 points (13-of-21 field goals) and 14 rebounds. He nearly recorded his second double-double of the weekend in the Bucs'  96-86 win over Central Florida on Nov. 19, finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Riding a six-game winning streak, the Bucs took the No. 3 spot in this week’s Florida College System Activities Association NJCAA Region 8 Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll as released Tuesday. After two straight weeks at No. 4, the Bucs moved up one spot in this week’s poll. The poll was voted on by Region 8 men’s basketball coaches, the Region 8 Men’s Basketball Chair and the FCSAA Scoreboard Coordinator.
