Ohio nutrient program expands statewide

The program to help Ohio farmers reduce nutrient runoff in fields will soon be available to nutrient retailers across the state.

Andrew Allman, executive director of the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Program says ag retailers and crop consultants from all over Ohio were inquiring how they could become certified.

“The program has created a little bit of a buzz and competition and so we knew that we were going to have to expand the program,” says Allman.

The program currently has 34 certified nutrient retailers in the Western Lake Erie Basin and beginning January 1, 2017 retailers across the state can become certified.

The program was formed in 2014 in response to the Toledo water crisis.

Allman says the 4R’s promote using the right source, at the right rate, in the right place, at the right time.
