CAMARILLO - The “Dreams Into Dollars: Finding Grants for Your Classroom” hands-on workshop will be led by grant writer Jonathan O’Brien on Saturday in Camarillo.

Designed for teachers, administrators and parent volunteers, the Ventura County Reading Association’s workshop will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St.

Workshop participants will learn how to find grants, begin the grant-writing process in class, receive feedback, and come away with leads, tips, handouts and resources.

Scouts to present free ‘Tent or Treat’

OAK VIEW - Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast will host “Tent or Treat,” a free open house event for families, from 3-5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Camp Arnaz Program Center, 155 Sulphur Mountain Road.

Children will participate in activity stations at seven locations and will each receive a brown bag for candy, a map and a “passport.” Children will receive a stamp on their passports as they complete each station and can enter a drawing for a pumpkin at the end. Free hot dogs and s’mores will be served.

Day of Aloha set for Saturday

OJAI - The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts will host a Day and Evening of Aloha on Saturday at 8585 Ojai-Santa Paula Road.

The first part of the event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will include Day of the Ancestors: La O Ke 'Aumakua, Ojai Hula, chant and crown lei making.

Cost is $60, including all materials, lunch and performance.

The event will continue at 6:30 p.m. with an intimate concert with slack-key guitar virtuoso Danny Carvalho, who will revisit Hawaiian classics, traditional slack-key standards and contemporary compositions with hula dancer and singer Nani Edgar. Cost is $20.

Science event have hands-on activities

OXNARD - The CSU Channel Islands 2016 Science Carnival will be from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 5 at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, 2900 Thurgood Marshall Drive.

The free event will be open to the public and provide students in kindergarten through eighth grade and their families with hands-on science experiences in a Halloween carnival setting. With a “spooky science” theme, activities and demonstrations will be designed to illustrate all of the science, technology, engineering and math fields using all five senses.

Pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers are invited to attend a preview of the carnival from 2:30-4 p.m. to learn about the hands-on science activities and how to implement them in their classrooms.

Golf tournament to benefit nonprofits

SIMI VALLEY - Knights of Columbus Council 9410 out of St. Peter Claver Parish in Simi Valley will host its fifth annual charity golf tournament at 10 a.m. Nov. 2 at Moorpark Country Club.

War veterans will participate as guests of the Knights of Columbus council.

Charities benefiting from the event will include Gold Coast Veterans and Get on the Bus.

VFW post to hold Halloween party

VENTURA - Adults are invited to a Halloween party Saturday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1679 in Ventura.

A potluck dinner is set for 6 p.m. followed by “scary-oke” karaoke at 7 p.m.

Admission will be free, and beverages can be purchased.

Halloween attire is encouraged but not required, and a costume contest will take place with cash prizes of $50 for first place and $25 for second place. Charitable drawings will be conducted.

Proceeds will benefit veterans and their families. VFW Post 1679 is at 3801 Market St., Ventura.
