A father jumped off of a New Jersey interstate overpass Monday night with his two children in his arms, killing himself and injuring the children, New Jersey State Police said.

The children were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, New Jersey State Police said in a statement. They did not release the names or ages of the father or children.

NBC New York, however, described the children's injuries as serious.

Shortly after 8 p.m. ET, New Jersey state troopers from the Totowa barracks responded to a call regarding a father who may have attempted suicide by jumping off of an I-287 overpass into the Wanaque River, police said. When troopers and local police arrived on the scene, they found the man's car on southbound I-287 in Wanaque Township, police said.

Responders found the father's body in a wooded area, NJ.com reported.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives have determined that the father intentionally jumped with the two children from the I-287 overpass into a wooded area near the Wanaque River," state police said in a statement.

New Jersey State Police said they would have more details on Tuesday morning and there would be no further updates before then.
