College roundup: FGCU men's tennis advances at ITA Southeast Regionals

The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team picked up three wins on the second day of the ITA Southeast Regional in Tallahassee on Friday.

The Eagles had two wins in the singles main draw, as Ezequiel Cerrini won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 over FSU’s Lucas Poullain, and Oliver Landert beat Stetson’s Loic Blanco, 7-6(3), 6-4. FGCU's Javier Fernandez lost 6-1, 2-6, 5-7 to Florida A &M’s Courage Okungbowa.

In the doubles main draw, the Eagles' Andres Alfonzo and Landert won 8-7 (5) over Stetson’s Loic Blanco and Angus Bradshaw, before falling 8-6 to Florida’s Maxx Lipman and Chase Perez-Blanco. FGCU's Austin Bates and Cerrini lost 8-7 (7) to Florida A&M’s Walner Espinoza and Carlos Augustin Waitman, while teammates Sam Chaffin and Fernandez fell to Kennesaw State’s Manuel Castellanos and Simon Prichard, 8-7(5).

Cerrini will play Florida’s Joseph Guillin, and Landert will face Central Florida’s Mariano Porter in Saturday’s singles Round of 32.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

ITA SOUTHEAST REGIONAL: The FGCU women’s tennis team picked up a win on the second day of the ITA Southeast Regional in Gainesville.

The Eagles’ Breana Stampfli advanced to the singles Round of 32, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stetson’s Sofia Ferding. FGCU’s Julianna Curtis lost 6-0, 6-2 to Florida’s Josie Kuhlman. FGCU's Julia Ascua withdrew from singles play.

In doubles, Ascua and Curtis lost, 8-7, to Miami’s Sinead Lohan and Dominika Paterova.

Stampfli will play Georgia’s Eleni Chrstofi in the Round of 32 on Saturday.

SWIMMING

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 162, FGCU 124: FGCU picked up four wins, despite the loss to No. 4 USC.

The FGCU relay team of Katie Latham, Gracie Redding, Hannah Burdge and Fanny Teijonsalo won the 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:23.95.

Individually for the Eagles, Teijonsalo took first in the 100 butterfly in 56.03 seconds, Barbara Caraballo won the 200 individual medley in 2:03.52 and Ashley Wright finished first in the one meter dive, with a score of 254.70.

FGCU (1-1) is at the UCLA meet in Los Angeles on Saturday at 3 p.m.
