Grain storage not an issue in Missouri harvest, yet

corn harvest 2010A lack of grain storage has not been an issue so far this harvest season in Missouri. Agriculture director Richard Fordyce says there are some growers who are storing corn outside but Missouri now has facilities that it didn’t have 10 years ago, “A lot of our shuttle loading facilities are basically dedicated to taking grain and then loading trains and loading unit trains and getting those out of the state. I think that has something to do with the fact that we’re not hearing storage issues yet at this point.”

Fordyce tells Brownfield this harvest season will end up being a long one, “The length of harvest has been a contributing – a positive contributing factor to that. I’m confident by the time we’re finished with this crop, because it’s going to be a pretty good-sized crop, I’m confident we’ll be hearing some of those stories about some storage shortages.”

Southeast Missouri farmers started harvesting corn in mid-August and farmers in northwest Missouri still have a lot of corn in their fields.

As of last Sunday, October 16th, corn harvest in Missouri was 78% complete. Soybeans were 34% harvested.
