The USDA is awarding $2.3 Million to 10 states facing veterinarian shortages in rural areas.

National Institute of Food and Agriculture Director Sonny Ramaswamy says the grants will enable training and retention initiatives as well as support educational programs and facilities including mobile services in rural areas.

The competitive awards are part of the new Veterinarian Services Grant Program created by the 2014 Farm Bill.

The first 12 grants announced include the University of Minnesota, Town and Country Veterinary Clinic in Auburn, Nebraska, University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association.
