Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! Have you had an amazing week? I hope so. It’s been a good one here – a little hectic, but for a good reason. We went on a long-awaited field trip on Wednesday. That meant a busy Monday and Tuesday for me since I had several online projects that had to be completed by Thursday and I wouldn’t be home for the majority of the day on Wednesday.

My homeschool field trip posse. The extra kid in the back is one of my three “adopted” kids. I think I may have to adopt one or two more in the near future.

We went to the Museum of History and Holocaust Education in Kennesaw, Georgia. If you’re somewhat local to the museum you might be interested to know that they offer free homeschool days on select Wednesdays throughout the year, featuring a guest speaker and activities surrounding a central theme.

This month’s theme was World War II on the Home Front and featured a rationing activity, which we all enjoyed, a tour of the newest exhibit, and World War II veteran, Richard Weber. Mr. Weber was, hands-down, our favorite part of the day. He is 90 years old and just precious! The girls and I wanted to bring him home.

On the way home, Brianna remarked that by the time she has kids, there probably won’t be any WWII vets still living and she was so happy to have had the opportunity to hear Mr. Weber’s first-hand account of that period of history. Yes. That.

My only disappointment for the day was that we didn’t get to explore the museum. Every moment was packed with educational activities, which would have been great if we’d had time to explore the museum on our own afterward. Since we had to get home in time for Megan’s photography class, we had to leave right after the scheduled events.

We did have one 15-minute break between activities, so Brianna and I went to explore just a bit. The museum wasn’t exactly what I expected. It appeared to mostly be vertical convention or trade show displays along with some wall displays with facts about the war and the people involved. I thought there would be more replicas like the one of a 1940’s living room. There were a few display cases of artifacts that were really interesting.

Proof that we can get up early when we need to. I had already been up about 45 minutes when I became coherent enough to take this picture.

We have tickets for the next homeschool day in November, so hopefully we can plan to spend more time exploring when we go back for that.

Today Josh is in Florida with his best friend for another friend’s graduation from the Florida Highway Patrol academy. You know what that means for me? No government co-op this week since half the class (literally) is in Florida!

I have seriously been enjoying the class (all the adults say they’re learning as much as the teens) and can highly recommend Constitutional Literacy. That being said, a Friday off does not make me sad at all – especially a Friday at the end of a very busy week.

I got some exciting mail on Monday – a copy of Homeschooling Today magazine with my article in it! It’s a slightly updated (to make it suitable for publication in a magazine versus a blog post) copy of my post, Homeschool Success.

  1. Congratulations on the article! That’s my dream someday! I would love to visit that museum someday, although we live in PA. Is it far from Dallas, GA? Maybe I could tie it in with a future visit to my sister. I love the picture of you and your “4” kids. My teens are at the stage when they never let me take their picture anymore…ESPECIALLY if I’m going to post it somewhere. Funny that they have no problem posting hundreds of selfies a day, lol. Glad you had a good day. 🙂

    1. I didn’t know where Dallas, GA was, so I Googled it. It’s very close – only a half hour away. It would definitely be something to work into your trip.

        1. Oh, don’t feel that way! It was reasonable to think I might know what cities were nearby. When I didn’t, I became curious. No big deal. 🙂

  2. Congratulations on your magazine article. I picked up two copies of Homeschooling Today at the homeschool conference I went to and really enjoyed the magazine. I keep meaning to get a subscription but I haven’t done it yet.
I think I tell you this every time I comment but your blog helps and encourages me so much. I love your humor and the mixture of posts you write.
I will be teaching Chemistry 101 after Christmas to a sophomore, are you still finding it a good fit? I would love to read a post from you, and experienced high school homeschool mom and how to implement it and any tricks or tips you have figured out.

    1. Hi, Krysten. We are still enjoying Chemistry 101, but I doubt our implementation of it would be much of a blog post. I just printed the accreditation guide and study guide, gave them and the DVD to my boy and he works through them fairly independently.

I had the study guide comb-bound. If I had it to do over, I would have had the accreditation guide bound with the study guide just so that everything would be in the same spot. The suggested pace is one segment per week, but some segments are too much for a week in my opinion. For example, Segment 1 is 9.5 hours’ worth of work. We don’t have nearly 2 hours per day to devote to chemistry, so he split that one into two weeks.

I hope that helps a bit and that you enjoy it as much as we have.

  3. Your week sounds cool. We went to a talk with a lady who grew up during WW2 earlier this year. Such a privilege to hear about it from an eye witness, I agree. Enjoy your weekend!

  4. Great job on the article. The field trip sounds wonderful. I will have to look it up. I think it is a bit far for us is western NC.
    Blessings, Dawn
