CHAMBERSBURG - Zombies will be invading Chambersburg in a few weeks, all in the name of benefiting a local food pantry.

Falling Spring Elementary School will be swarming with zombies for the first Zombie Run  at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. The cost is $5 and proceeds will go toward the CASHS Cupboard, which is a food bank in the high school.

"Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for the CASHS Cupboard in a fun way," event coordinator Ian Mangan said in an email. "At least 50% of our school is on free or reduced lunch, which means there is an astounding amount of our fellow students that struggle to meet basic food needs. The CASHS Cupboard is a project to create a food pantry in the school to help meet those needs and we would like to do our absolute best to support that cause."

The Zombie Run will occur on an eight-tenths of a mile portion of the course used by the cross country team. Runners will be dismissed in groups of 15-20 people. This event is open to all ages, however young children will need to run with an adult for safety reasons, but Mangan believes the course and event shouldn't be too scary for children.

No obstacles will be in the course, but there will be some Halloween decorations and zombies will be the main attraction, according to Mangan. Course runners will be given two flag football flags to wear as they traverse the course and must survive the course without losing either flag to the zombies. Those with at least one ribbon intact at the end of the course will receive a ribbon.
