NGFA issues alert for mycotoxins

The National Grain & Feed Association (NGFA) has issued a mycotoxin alert. It’s a reminder to the grain and feed industries on the FDA’s notices that aflatoxin, fumonisin and vomitoxin might be present in raw grain, feed ingredients and finished feed.

Charles Woloshuk, a plant pathologist with Purdue University says these myxotoxins are driven by weather conditions.

“All these diseases are associated with the weather, plus genetics, tillage, etc. Some we see during drought years, some during wet years so this year being a bit wet we’re looking at those that are produced under those conditions.” says Woloshuk.

The FDA does not permit grain, grain by-products, feed or other food products containing high mycotoxin levels to be blended with uncontaminated products with lesser levels to produce products with acceptable levels of mycotoxin in human or animal food.

An NGFA fact sheet on mycotoxin in grains can be found here.
