Ohio harvest conditions remain good, yields average

The President of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation says harvest conditions in Ohio are looking good. Frank Burkett III operates a dairy and grain farm in Stark County in eastern Ohio and says the weather this year has been uneven in his county, which in turn makes crop yields uneven.

“Very spotty weather in our area so the yields are average to below average in spots. But you can go ten miles away and have below average crops and go ten miles in the other direction and have, I wouldn’t say record crops but above average crops” says Burkett.

Burkett tells Brownfield field conditions across Ohio should be optimal for harvest this year because the state didn’t experience as much severe weather over the course of the growing season as did other states in the Midwest.

“The field condition has been good because we haven’t had the water challenges for harvesting the crops. I’m certain there’s some wet spots in Ohio but I would say all in all harvest conditions right now for the fall are looking really good.” says Burkett.

Burkett says a crop appraisal on the corn silage yields on his own farm is either at or just below average and says that trend is similar for members all across Ohio.
