Monsanto signs global CRISPR-cas agreement

monsanto sign-post-dispatchMonsanto has joined with the Broad Institute of M-I-T and Harvard for the use of CRISPR genome editing technology in agriculture.

The Institute is a leader in the development and sharing of CRISPR-cas and has issued several U.S. patents covering the technology.

Monsanto’s scientific communications manager Camille Scott says the technology will help farmers feed the world, “We believe that these technologies will help plant scientists address some of the great challenges facing agriculture and our planet more efficiently. And, of course then, in turn, help farmers continue to meet growing demands.”

Scott tells Brownfield it’s a global licensing agreement that is non-exclusive. She says Monsanto and Broad share a broad licensing philosophy, “So that innovation truly rules the day. So, while we have global license to use CRISPR-cas in our research it doesn’t preclude the Broad Institute from working with other companies in the ag space as well.”

Scott tells Brownfield the agreement applies across Monsanto’s crop portfolio but they don’t have details to share just yet. She says this is the first licensing agreement the Broad Institute has made with an ag company.
