Iowa harvest activity slowed by wet conditions

soybeans-west-point-9-13Wet conditions have slowed harvest activity in Iowa over the past week.

“Unfortunately the torrential rains that have caused devastating flooding in eastern Iowa have also kept many farmers out of the fields due to muddy conditions,” said Iowa ag secretary Bill Northey. “We need several days of dry weather to allow for statewide harvest to get underway,”

There were scattered reports of corn for grain being harvested and soybean harvest has begun where field conditions allow.

Seventy-two percent of corn is mature and 68 percent of soybeans are dropping leaves. Corn condition rated 82 percent good to excellent and soybeans rated 81 percent good to excellent.

According to state climatologist Harry Hillaker, rain totals in Iowa for the month of September have varied widely. But the statewide average rainfall thus far in September has averaged 6.29 inches, the highest September average since 1986.
