Marquette University will honor Mother Teresa with a Mass on Wednesday in advance of her canonization into sainthood by Pope Francis.

Mother Teresa, head of Missionaries of Charity, died on Sept. 5, 1997. She was canonized into sainthood at Vatican City on Sept. 4, 2016.

The Marquette Mass will be celebrated at noon Wednesday near a Mother Teresa statue outside Schroeder Complex, 561 N. 15th St., just north of W. Clybourn St., according to a news release from the Jesuit university.

The Rev. Thomas Krettek, vice president of mission and ministry for Marquette, will preside along with the Rev. John Burns of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Mother Teresa, who died in 1997, is to be canonized Sept. 4 outside the Vatican in Rome.

Funeral services planned for slain nun

In 1981, Marquette honored Mother Teresa with the Père Marquette Discovery Award, the university’s highest honor.

More than 10,000 people gathered in the then MECCA Arena to celebrate with her on June 13, 1981, according to the university.
