Lions release WR Andre Caldwell
Allen Park — The Detroit Lions have officially parted ways with injured receiver Andre Caldwell.
Caldwell, nicknamed Bubba, signed with the Lions in May after four seasons with the Denver Broncos. He was expected to compete for a backup receiver job while contributing on special teams.
“You know Bubba has some experience within the system, some of the system,” coach Jim Caldwell said back in June. “Not only that, he’s been in all big games obviously, and the biggest one was just this past winter, and he’s been doing a great job just in terms of mentoring some of the young guys.”
The veteran receiver looked good through the early stages of the offseason program, but suffered a hand injury during training camp. The Lions placed him on injured reserve last week and Monday’s release indicates he and the team agreed on an injury settlement.
By releasing Caldwell with an injury settlement, it potentially allows the Lions to re-sign him later in the year.
