Term limits have been placed on 15 State Legislatures, eight of the ten largest Cities in America adopted Term Limits for their City Councils and/or Mayor, and 37 States place Term Limits on their Constitutional Officers.

USTL wants a Government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Not a ruling class who care more about deals to benefit themselves, than their Constituents.

they have worked with citizens all across the nation, helping them better understand why term limits are a necessary Government reform, and how to implement that vision from your town council to Congress.

USTL, is based out of Melbourne, Florida, advocates for term limits at all levels of Government. Since it was established in the early 1990s, USTL has assisted in enacting and defending term limits on State Legislatures in 15 States as well as Congressional term limits in 23 states. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in U.S. Term Limits v. Thornton that States may not individually enact term limits for their members of Congress and the popular and hard-won Congressional term limits never went into effect.

Using the Citizen Initiative as its most potent tool, voters in States and Municipalities across the Country are enacting and reaffirming term limit laws one election cycle after another.

In 1995, when the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that state enacted term limits for members of Congress were unconstitutional, the term limits debate changed. This decision mandated only one path for the enactment of term limits, a constitutional amendment, and in the process severely hampered the term limits movement.

However, in 2008 Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) introduced S.J.R. 21, an amendment that if passed would place 3 terms on the U.S. House of Representatives and 2 terms on the U.S. Senate, the most commonly accepted length of terms of those respective bodies. The courage of DeMint to stand up to lobbyists and special interests gave the term limits movement a new life. This is why they are calling on all candidates for Congress in the to sign the U.S. Term Limits Constitutional Amendment and publicly show their support for a necessary reform to Congress.

Polling consistently shows support for term limits in the mid 70% range or higher. Major votes on State Legislative term limits have been held in California, Maine and South Dakota over the last few years and overwhelmingly voters defended their State’s term limits law.

Term limits provide fresh faces with fresh ideas to elected office. They reduce lobbyist and special interest influence and make room in Congress for the citizen Legislator. Americans are sick of the political games and power politics; they are ready for a return to a citizen Legislature which was the intent of our founding fathers. Those in Congress committed to bringing genuine change to Washington are invited to sign the U.S. Term Limits Constitutional Amendment Pledge calling for Congressional term limits of three terms in the House and two in the Senate.
