ALAMOGORDO – A 23-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after Alamogordo Police Department officers learned through investigation the man allegedly shot an Alamogordo man twice in the leg, an APD spokesman said.

Deputy Chief Roger Schoolcraft said Joshua Diaz is charged with one count of third-degree felony aggravated battery (great bodily harm) and one count of fourth-degree felony aggravated assault (use of a deadly weapon).

Diaz was jailed at the Otero County Detention Center on a $50,000 no-10 percent bond pending his appearance in court.

Schoolcraft said APD officers responded to a home in the 1800 block of Yucca Lane to a report of shots being fired around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He said upon arrival officers found a 34-year-old man suffering from numerous gunshot wounds.

The man was transported to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries then the man was airlifted to an El Paso trauma center due to the severity of his injuries, Schoolcraft said.

He said officers and detectives learned through investigation that Diaz was a possible suspect in the incident.

APD detectives obtained a Magistrate Court warrant for Diaz’s arrest then issued a regional BOLO (be on the lookout) for Diaz, Schoolcraft said.

He said Otero County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on U.S. Highway 54/70 around 3 p.m. Thursday.

OCSO deputies found Diaz inside the vehicle then arrested Diaz on the warrant, Schoolcraft said.

“I think it was a good team effort between the Sheriff’s Office and Alamogordo police,” he said. “There’s a lot of collaboration going on and information sharing which is always good for law enforcement. We put out the BOLO and the Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle. It worked out really well.”

According to Magistrate records, the victim and a friend of his were on the porch of the home in the 1800 block of Yucca Lane Wednesday.

According to records obtained by the Daily News, Diaz allegedly confronted the two men over some text messages sent prior to Diaz’s arrival at the home.

Diaz allegedly left the home after confronting the victim about the text messages, records show.

According to records, detectives learned through investigation that Diaz allegedly returned to the residence then the two men heard numerous shots being fired at and hitting a vehicle parked in the driveway of the home.

The two men ran inside the residence because they feared for their lives, but the victim sustained his injuries before being able to get inside the home, according to records.
