In my opinion, we can never write or read too many articles offering tips on how to keep dogs calm on the 4th of July…
The number of dogs who run away during this particular holiday continues to increase every year, and way too often many of them are never reunited with their families.
I know for a fact that Harley is not a fireworks fan. Jaxson was too young last year to notice.
I believe he slept through most of the festivities. But since he doesn’t care much for my kitchen veggie slicer, I can only imagine ball rockets, cherry bombs, and dragon eggs will render the same reaction #doodleontherun
Ironically, my wedding anniversary is on the 3rd of July, so the holiday weekend has become somewhat of a personal – private celebration around our house, and that fits in perfectly when it comes to that popular question “what about the Boys?”
OUR SAFETY TIPS FOR THE 4TH OF JULY –
Exercise – during the day we are outside, running errands, playing in the backyard, staying busy. I try to avoid any “downtime” while the sun is up…
ID Tags – although they usually don’t wear collars in the house, on the 4th of July they do. I’d rather be safe than sorry.
Music – one year in Va, our “new” neighbors had a party. The fireworks were continuous and loud. That’s the year I found out Doodles like the soulful sounds of the Motown era. I’ve got my playlist in my office #readysetgo…
Distraction – a favorite treat that lasts a long time and keeps them smiling works well. I’ve got two Red Barn™ Bully Sticks on standby.
ADDITIONAL TOOLS TO CONSIDER –
- Thundershirt – while I’ve never used one, I know dogs who have continued success with it. The pressure it provides has a real calming effect on their nervous system.
- Just say YES to drugs – if your dog panics a great deal, you might want to ask your vet to prescribe medication to help. There are natural stress relievers for pets that can reduce anxiety.
WHAT TERRIFIES YOU? –
Got a visual?
Now magnify that fear a few times. Then imagine not understanding why it’s happening.
That is what I believe our pets experience when frightened by 4th of July fireworks. #caninehorror
Hope these tips gave you some ideas. Got any to share? Love to have you add to the list!
ONE MORE THING –
As we celebrate our nation’s freedom, let us remember to honor the courageous men and women dedicated to preserving it. Happy Independence Day 🇺🇸

Noise doesn’t phase me in the least, but recently Bailie started being scared of fireworks, so we will be working with her this weekend!

Oh Emma- you’re so brave! Let me know Bailey handled everything. The Boys aren’t that upset, they just prefer to stick close to a human while the fireworks are going off.

We’re having a trial run right now with thunderstorms. Calming Collars are on, TV is cranked, fans are on, and windows are closed. So far so good!
Hope you have a quiet weekend and a wonderful anniversary!

Sounds like you were all set. Last night wasn’t as bad as I thought it could have been. Lee and I just sat on the sofas and had one of each tucked ever so neatly under our legs. No trembling, no real signs of distress. But that was because we were so close. Getting ready for this evening! Hope your enjoying your 4th of July

First of all, “Here’s looking at you, Kid(s)!” on your anniversary!! I’m sure you’ll have a great one!!
Last year Callie was still with us on the 4th. She hated fireworks, thunderstorms, and just about any other loud noise. I had to keep her on a leash outside this time of year, at least once the sun went down. Now Shadow is beginning to startle more often during thunderstorms – and not wanting to go outside to relieve herself – so I’m expecting more of the same tonight and tomorrow night when the fireworks start. Thankfully, though, she doesn’t get as anxious about it as Callie used to. Silly Ducky just barks back at the noises.

So far, so good. Anniversary celebration was quiet (how I like it after 40 years) we each were snuggled next to a fluff ball, watching a movie eating some really high caloric desserts, laughing at how boring we’ve become! The Boys seem okay as long as we’re close by. Wouldn’t dream of leaving them home alone. Hope your enjoying your 4th of July
