Corn Belt ready for a cool shot of weather

CornSunsetFarmers and crops in the Corn Belt will get cooler temperatures this week.

Michael Clark, meteorologist with BAMwx.com says there’s a cold front settling in from Michigan all the way down through Oklahoma.  “Dew points are going to dive down into the 40’s and 50’s,” he says.  “We have a stretch coming for at least eight days of temperatures well below normal for much of the Corn Belt.  A lot of places are going to be able to get below 70 degrees for the next several nights and it’s going to be great for the crops.”

He tells Brownfield as pollination nears – the weather pattern for the month of July is shaping up to be rather interesting.  “The heat will return,” he says.  “But we’re in a pattern when the heat returns, the Northwest Flow returns and places get in on rains again.  There will be a brief warm period next week and then get knocked down for a day or two.  And then we look for the hottest air of the season to build in.”

Clark says that hot air pattern is likely to hit right at mid-July and the western part of the Corn Belt could see a string of triple-digit days.  “That period though is transient,” he says.  “That heat will last maybe five to six days at the most and beyond that there’s another big front that could come in around the 17th of the month that has the chance of strong storms again and another cool down behind it.”
