Vilsack on risk of ‘de facto’ GMO labeling laws

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says time is running out for Congress to pass a national GMO labeling bill, “And if they are not able to get something done then we are going to have, essentially, a de facto labeling law set by one or more states and by a number of companies making the decision on their own.” That’s because Vermont’s state-specific GMO labeling bill takes effect NEXT Friday.

Vilsack tells Brownfield Ag News, “It makes a lot of sense for Senator Stabenow and Senator Roberts to finish their work, give their colleagues the chance to vote up or down and, hopefully, get a national standard that works for everybody.”

Vilsack tells Brownfield Congress needs to pass a national standard that’s mandatory, that informs consumers, but doesn’t send the wrong message about the safety of GMO foods.
