Worker safety improving in meat and poultry processing

BrownfieldAppImageA new report shows employee safety continues to improve at meat and poultry slaughtering and processing facilities.

The Government Accountability Office says injury and illness rates from 2004 to 2013 significantly declined.  Meat workers had higher rates of injuries and illnesses when compared to poultry workers.

Hazardous conditions for workers include tasks associated with musculoskeletal disorders, exposure to chemicals and pathogens, and traumatic injuries from machines and tools.

The North American Meat Institute says worker safety is a priority for the industry and along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration they have continued to improve safety guidelines.
