Although I did decant some sun cream when I went away, I only used it the once because… deep breath… I burnt on the first day by falling asleep in the sunshine. I haven’t burnt in 20 years so I really was furious with myself and went out and got an SPF50 straight away. In the way that such things happen, I didn’t get a uniformly reddened skin that might somehow fade away evenly – oh no.. I got a ridiculous, bikini strap marked red arm and a big white patch where my book had flopped onto my stomach. I have one arm that is a completely different colour to the other. So embarrassing. Oh, and for no reason that I can work out, a big round white patch right on my cleavage.

Feeling The Burn
Feeling The Burn

Luckily, I didn’t get severely burnt – no blisters or anything like that, just hot and too red skin that has now lost it’s red glow and is just a bit itchy and peely. It’s being greatly helped by Lavera Aftersun Lotion which is the first thing that came to hand when I got home. I don’t naturally pick out organic brands, but I’m so pleased I alighted upon this. It’s got all the texture of a very nourishing body cream, with a pleasant, fresh scent, but it’s cooling and sinks in pretty much immediately. More importantly, it instantly banishes the itching which is probably the most crucial thing visually – I really don’t need to add some scabs to my poor old arms on top of burn. It probably won’t surprise you to know that it contains aloe, that great super soother, and soybean oil. I’m surprised to find it also contains alcohol but I haven’t found this to give any adverse effects.

The end result is that my skin is settling back to feeling conditioned and hydrated. I still can’t believe I let it happen though. It’s £8.90 HERE which seems very reasonable for 200ml.
