This May, the OUP Philosophy team honors Thomas Hobbes (April 5, 1588 – December 4, 1679) as their Philosopher of the Month. Hobbes is remembered as the author of one of the greatest of books on political philosophy ever written, Leviathan, in which he argued with a precision reached by few other thinkers.

Reading Hobbes’ “Leviathan” yesterday morn, then hearing more about North Korea on National Public Radio headline news last night, called to mind President Trump talking about sanctions before the United Nations a week ago Monday. He’s a great man, no doubt, probably the best President since Dwight “Ike: Eisenhower but, these sanctions won’t work any more than Chamberlain and Halifax’s table talks with Hitler were salus populi of our parents generation. The United Nations is not very effective as a peacekeeping force, never will be. All guys like Kim Jung Un is being smashed in the mouth with a hammer.
