Ernie's friend Susie Anderson is facing a challenging summer. She never liked the doctor's wife, Ethel, who conducts herself as the Queen of Athelstane. Unfortunately Ethel's impending divorce forces her to move into a small cabin two doors down from the Andersons, and leads her to adopt Susie as her new, but very reluctant, best friend.
This summer tourist season in Athelstane brings a nasty-tempered drunk into a usually friendly local tavern, looking for a fight with anyone, including the soon-to-be divorced doctor with his buxom new assistant, Bunnie.
During an evening campfire at the Andersons' lake home, Ernie and her friends overhear a violent argument between the nasty drunk and an odd, secretive man living next door. Apparently the two men knew each other before coming to Athelstane and are now Susie's neighbors, each renting a cabin on either side of Ethel. The summer is looking interesting, and more than a little dangerous.
